“Good morning, it’s not every day we get to break ground a new courthouse. This groundbreaking is just a ceremony. But it is important because it is a symbol of all the hard work accomplished by many individuals and groups, past and present that will result in an attractive, secure and functional courthouse.
First and foremost, we want to thank Johnson County voters because they are the ones who approved a public safety sales tax to provide funding for the much needed courthouse. Later this morning the Board of County Commissioners will be asked to authorize Public Building Commission Lease Purchase Revenue Bonds ($169.4 million) for construction of both the courthouse and medical examiner facility.
The bonds are scheduled to be sold on August 8 with the expectation of attracting the lowest interest rates possible in light of the county’s AAA bond ratings.
Many people were involved in the planning of the project and helped with the sales tax campaign. I want to make special mention of the great work done by District Attorney Steve Howe. Steve and I made over 75 presentations to many different groups. His first hand knowledge of the problems of the current courthouse was important information to share.
Thank you all for being here and sharing in this important event in our county’s history. “
